Dionne Warwick & (what!) friends celebrate World Hunger Day in the Royal Albert Hall

Music icon Dionne Warwick returns to the Royal Albert Hall to lead an all-star lineup including Cliff Richard, Alexandra Burke, Boy George, Caro Emerald, Tony Hadley, Joe McElderry, Katie Melua, Mica Paris, Rumer and The London Community Gospel Choir. The gala is in aid of international development charity, The Hunger Project.

In celebration of World Hunger Day 2012, and as major highlight of her 50th Anniversary World Tour, Warwick and her friends will perform duets and solo performances of songs that have become part of the soundtrack to all our lives. It will include the instantly recognisable collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Barry Manilow and The Bee Gees. At the end of May, London’s Royal Albert Hall will host a gala concert for World Hunger Day 2012.

The first World Hunger Day took place 15 months ago at the Apollo Victoria theatre with Dionne Warwick among a star-studded cast, and she is back to lend her support again to an event which will aid the work of The Hunger Project. This year she will be joined by Alexandra Burke, Boy George, Katie Melua and many others, with rising stars such as Caro Emerald and Rumer, as well as golden oldies Sandie Shaw and Cliff Richard. Tony “Downtown” Hatch will conduct the orchestra. Proceeds from the concert will directly benefit communities in 20,000 villages across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America all of whom experience chronic and persistent hunger.… [continue reading]

Raina Kabaivanska donates Roberto Capucci gowns for charity

One of opera’s most elegant stars, Raina Kabaivanska, has donated a number of her concert gowns for a charity auction which starts today.

The soprano, who will be 77 next month, has given many of her signature Roberto Capucci creations to E For People who are auctioning more than 10,000 items of clothing and accessories in this their 7th year. All proceeds from sales will go in favour of the Salesian Mission in Ethiopia Adwua for the construction of the first, and only, paediatric hospital.

David Walliams begins his River Thames swim for Sport Relief

Comedian David Walliams is set to begin his swim along the River Thames from Gloucestershire to London later as part of his latest fundraising effort. He will start at the river’s source near Lechlade and finish at Big Ben.

Walliams said: “People often think of the Thames as just central London but there’s 100 miles of it before you get to Teddington Lock.”

The Big Splash Challenge for Sport Relief is 140 miles (225km) long and will take eight days to complete.

Annie Lennox has collected an OBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace for her charity work fighting Aids and poverty in Africa.The former Eurythmics singer, 56, said: “Its quite magical. Its really meaningful to me that its for charity work.

“To get this acknowlegement means people are listening. Campaigning has been taking up a great deal of my commitment for quite a few years, and what it means is that theres a significance to what Im doing — Im not just working in a void”.… [continue reading]

The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis is one of the patrons of the charity The Hunger Project. Here’s what he has to say on their website:

I was brought up to believe that we are all better off if we support one another. I’ve performed at many charity gigs over the years and it feels like the right thing to do. Why wouldn’t you want to use the talents you have to support a worthy cause?’

“Both Angela [co-patron Angela Rippon] and I are really proud to be patrons of The Hunger Project. Although The Hunger Project is a relatively small charity compared with the big players, it is very smart in it’s approach to tackling poverty. The money, raised by the sale of a Picasso painting last year, is intended to make “a significant contribution to many people’s lives”. Music charity Nordoff Robbins, which specialises in music therapy, is among the recipients, receiving £250,000.

Chairman of the Trustees Mark Wordsworth said Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber was “delighted” . “Previously we have concentrated on fine art and arts education, but we have decided to help a broader scope of people and projects directly with the funds invested from the Picasso sale,” said Mr Wordsworth.

Picasso’s portrait of Angel Fernandez de Soto (also known as The Absinthe Drinker) fetched £34.7m when it was sold at auction in London in June last year.… [continue reading]
