Alexandra Burke Dionne Warwick & (what!) friends celebrate World Hunger Day in the Royal Albert HallMusic icon Dionne War­wick returns to the Royal to lead an all-star lineup includ­ing , Alex­an­dra Burke, Boy George, Caro Emer­ald, Tony Had­ley, Joe McEld­erry, Katie Melua, Mica Paris, Rumer and The Lon­don Com­munity Gos­pel Choir. The gala is in aid of inter­na­tional devel­op­ment char­ity, The Hun­ger Project.

In cel­eb­ra­tion of World Hun­ger Day 2012, and as major high­light of her 50th Anniversary World Tour, War­wick and her friends will per­form duets and solo per­form­ances of songs that have become part of the soundtrack to all our lives. At the end of May, London’s  will host a gala con­cert for World Hun­ger Day 2012.

Dionne Warwick Natalie Cole The Hunger Project 2011 Dionne Warwick, Cliff Richard, Alexandra Burke and Katie Melua among those singing for World Hunger Day 2012The first World Hun­ger Day took place 15 months ago at the Apollo Vic­toria theatre with Dionne War­wick among a star-studded cast, and she is back to lend her sup­port again to an event which will aid the work of The Hun­ger Pro­ject. This year she will be joined by Alex­an­dra Burke, Boy George, Katie Melua and many oth­ers, with rising stars such as Caro Emer­ald and Rumer, as well as golden oldies San­die Shaw and . Comedian David Wal­li­ams is set to begin his swim along the River Thames from Gloucester­shire to Lon­don later as part of his latest fun­drais­ing effort. He will start at the river’s source near Lech­lade and fin­ish at Big Ben.

Wal­li­ams said: “People often think of the Thames as just cent­ral Lon­don but there’s 100 miles of it before you get to Ted­ding­ton Lock.”

The Big Splash Chal­lenge for Sport Relief is 140 miles (225km) long and will take eight days to complete.

The money, raised by the sale of a Picasso paint­ing last year, is inten­ded to make “a sig­ni­fic­ant con­tri­bu­tion to many people’s lives”. Music char­ity Nor­doff Rob­bins, which spe­cial­ises in music ther­apy, is among the recip­i­ents, receiv­ing £250,000.

Chair­man of the Trust­ees Mark Wordsworth said Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber was “delighted” . “Pre­vi­ously we have con­cen­trated on fine art and arts edu­ca­tion, but we have decided to help a broader scope of people and pro­jects dir­ectly with the funds inves­ted from the Picasso sale,” said Mr Wordsworth.

Picasso’s por­trait of Angel Fernan­dez de Soto (also known as The Absinthe Drinker) fetched £34.7m when it was sold at auc­tion in Lon­don in June last year.… [con­tinue reading]
