’s anti-trust authority has fined Apple 900,000 euros for allegedly unfair commercial practices that hurt consumers, the authority said earlier today.

An antitrust probe found that Apple companies operating in Italy “did not fully apply” a two-year warranty for consumers. The investigation also uncovered “insufficiently clear information” on the coverage of extra services by the computer giant, the authority added.

Apple’s Italian subsidiaries did not immediately respond to news of the fine.

The 1980s synthesiser pioneer Thomas Dolby is releasing his first album in two decades, but you might know him better by his other achievement — a revolution in mobile phone ringtones.

It is possibly the world’s best known mobile phone ringtone and, depending on your perspective, arguably its most annoying. But there is little doubting the success of Nokia’s famous musical logo, which is said to be heard globally nearly two billion times per day, about 20,000 times per second.

One man who helped bring the world the sonic phrase known simply as “the Nokia tune” is the British musician Thomas Dolby, best known for his synthesiser-based hits of the 1980s.

At the beginning of the 90s I was getting pretty jaded with the music business, so I went to Silicon Valley, which was very exciting, and for the first time computer companies were starting to take music seriously.”

Dolby set up a firm that created “polyphonic” virtual synthesisers — software that allowed computers to play musical notes and, importantly, to play more than one sound at the same time.… [continue reading]

dead sea scrolls Google helps put high resolution images of the Dead Sea Scrolls onlineUltra-high resolution images of several Dead Sea Scrolls are now available on the web, after Google helped digitise the ancient texts. The search firm lent its expertise in scanning documents to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Both amateur and professional scholars will now have access to 1,200 megapixel images.

Five scrolls have been captured, including the Temple Scroll and Great Isaiah Scroll.

Ardon Bar-Hama, a noted phởtographer of antiquities, used ultraviolet-protected flash tubes to light the scrolls for 1/4000th of a second. The exposure time — which is much shorter than a conventional camera flash — was designed to protect the scrolls from damage.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered between 1947 and 1956 inside 11 caves along the shore of the Dead Sea, East of Jerusalem. … [continue reading]

Thomas Edison Edisons concrete pianoAs his career as an inventor became increasingly successful, Thomas Edison developed a range of philanthropic ideals, including the desire to place a in the home of every American.

To ensure affordability, expensive (and resonant) wood would be replaced by a piano framework of concrete. Perfectly tuneable — if somewhat immoveable — the instrument would hopefully extend America’s musical talent, although Edison was far from the best to judge. He had been pretty much deaf since childhood — the result, he claimed, of being lifted by the ears onto a moving train by a helpful conductor (presumably, as Edison’s brother suffered similar partial deafness, a family hazard).

group texting 400x281 Che sorpresa! Italy leads Europe in smartphone useItalians are born to communicate, and they’re loving their new mezzo — the smartphone. Now they have social networking apps to use alongside arm gestures and strong voices.

Italians use smartphones and tablets more than the rest of Europe, spending approximately two billion euros annually on hi-tech accessories. The Doxa research agency, which conducted a survey for Ebay.it, said Italians spent 20% more on hi-tech products in 2010 than they did in the previous year.

The most purchased devices were cellphones, up 45%, namely thanks to iPhone sales which rose by 119%. According to a study by CBS Outdoor-Europe and Harris Interactive, 99% of all Italians have at least one cellphone compared to just 96% of Europeans as a whole. Nearly 60% of Italian cellphone users use surf the net with their phones, whereas only 52% of Europeans in general do the same.… [continue reading]

Idiosyncratic concert pianist James Rhodes is disillusioned with but loves . Here’s what he says on his Telegraph blog:

James Rhodes 400x273 Facebook (the dude with questionable hygiene) vs Twitter (which smells of roses and cloves)Truth be told, I only signed up to Facebook in the hope of being inundated with frisky offers from various beautiful women around the world. Instead, as is so often the case with online expectations, I found myself being poked, prodded, harassed and plagued by old “friends” I had no interest in staying in touch with, psychopathic ex-girlfriends and larger than life (in every sense of the word) girls from Omaha. Certain journalists have also looked through my friends list and messaged many of them digging for dirt about my past drug use, sexual exploits and God knows what else.… [continue reading]
