Nikolay Tsiskaridze Nikolai Tsiskaridze falls silent, afraid of dismissal from the Bolshoi’s , fearing dismissal from the company, refuses to communicate with the press without permission from the Bolshoi’s spokesman Katerina Novikova.

Tsiskaridze was asked to comment on the fact that the Bolshoi Theatre will not renew the contract with the acting head of the trade union Ruslan Pronin, but Tsiskaridze refused:

If Novikova, our spokesman, will allow me to talk with you, I’ll gladly do it. But without her permission, I have no right to speak.

When asked if it this veto only concerns talking about the Bolshoi Theatre, he said that it applied to all his comments to the media, saying that it might be sacked from the company if he didn’t toe the line. Tsiskaridze gave a damning television interview a month ago which must have infuriated many of the Bolshoi’s administrators when he said that he was ready and willing to take over the top job.

Tsiskaridze has already been reprimanded several times by the Bolshoi Theatre for talking too freely to the media, and finished in court earlier this month.

The relationship between the management of the theatre and the dancer worsened after the attack on the artistic director of the ballet company, Sergei Filin.

Filin Tsiskaridze Cruelty at the Bolshoi: acid attacks and smear campaigns. Tsiskaridze responds. had been receiving intimidating phone calls for a while, and had had his tyres punctured and his email hacked, but the acid attack that has shocked the dance world is beyond all reasoning. While police are not ruling out a personal vendetta, it is almost certainly an attack by someone who wants him removed from his position as head of the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet.

Gennady Yanin, who was a previous frontrunner for the job, was dropped after a successful smear campaign about his homosexuality and some explicit internet phởtos. At the time, Anatoly Iksanov, general director of the Bolshoi Theatre, said,

There are some people in the theatre who would like to take the job of artistic director, and they must have played a role in this mean intrigue.… [continue reading]

This was her passport from the harshness of reality to an “imaginary world of beauty, magical sounds and unearthly purity”, she said in her autobiography Galina — a Russian Story.

She made her professional stage début in 1944 singing operetta, then won a competition at the Bolshoi Theatre in  in 1952 singing Rachmaninoff’s song “O, Do Not Grieve” and Verdi’s aria “O patria mia” from Aida.… [continue reading]

marianna ryzhkina Bolshoi prima ballerina Marianna Ryzhkina adds her voice to the chorus of disapprovalThings still are not as they should be at the shiny new Bolshoi, says Reuters.

Back stage, dancers grumble that practice rooms have become cramped and the Bolshoi has lost the charm that can only exist with the patina of a bygone era. Much the same criticism levelled at the House renovation and that of Milan’s . Then there are those who still prefer the smoke-stained sepia look of ’s Sistine Chapel before the restoration.

Marianna Ryzhkina, a Bolshoi prima ballerina, with the company for 22 years, says,

The theatre’s spirit has completely deteriorated. The rehearsal space has been taken apart and replaced with office-like rooms with low ceilings and other defects.”

She added that two dance studios have sloping ceilings so low that dancers risk bumping their heads during high lifts.… [continue reading]
