The Broadway musical “Billy Elliot”, winner of 10 Tony Awards in 2009 and a hot ticket for much of its run, will close on January 8, 2012, after 3 years and 3 months of performances.

The decision to close came after a somewhat precipitous decline in ticket sales that accelerated through the late spring and summer amid competition from new musicals like “” and “”, hit revivals like “Anything Goes” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”, and “Memphis”, the durable recipient of the 2010 Tony for best musical.

“Billy Elliot” was one of the most successful musicals in in recent years, earning back its capitalization of $18 million – a high figure for Broadway – in just 14 months.

In recent weeks the producers of “Billy Elliot” had cut some profane language from the show and made other minor changes to the script, like clarifying some of the dialogue, in hopes of appealing to groups that buy tickets in bulk. But “Billy Elliot” was unable to rely on another strategy of long-running musicals like “Chicago,” “Hairspray” and “Rent” – casting celebrity actors for limited periods – because key roles required significant dance experience. The United States tour of “Billy Elliot,” meanwhile, is scheduled to resume next month after a hiatus, during which, the producers said, costs are being cut to make the show more profitable on the road.

The first production of “Billy Elliot” opened in May 2005 in London, where it continues to run.

book of mormon 517x600 Critics Roundup: South Park creators musical The Book of Mormon triumphs on BroadwayIt looks as though everyone got the joke after all. Even in Utah, it seems, with no damning articles or negative reviews. Time reports:

“I was prepared for scatological humor, generous doses of the F-word, and off-color bawdiness—this is South Park without network censorship, remember?” a Mormon reviewer blogged on BeliefNet, “but I wasn’t prepared for my Mormon faith to be lampooned with any sensitivity. I was happy to be wrong.”

“I was expecting to be offended,” The Salt Lake Tribune quotes Anne Christensen, a 22-year-old Mormon New Yorker who saw a preview, “but was pleasantly surprised by how incredibly sweet it was.”

One of the most anticipated musicals this Broadway season, “The ,” satirizes the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, sexualizes the ritual of baptism and has plenty of politically incorrect jokes.

But “South Park” creators and say they have also created a heartwarming story of two young present day Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda who grapple with the relevance of their beliefs for Africans dealing with and the character of brutal warlord General Butt Naked.

“We didn’t sit down and say, ‘All right, let’s bash Mormons, how should we do it? Let’s spend seven years of our lives writing a Broadway musical so that we can rip on Mormons,” Parker quipped.… [continue reading]
