Alexandra Burke Dionne Warwick & (what!) friends celebrate World Hunger Day in the Royal Albert HallMusic icon Dionne War­wick returns to the Royal Albert Hall to lead an all-star lineup includ­ing , Alex­an­dra Burke, Boy George, Caro Emer­ald, Tony Had­ley, Joe McEld­erry, Katie Melua, Mica Paris, Rumer and The Lon­don Com­munity Gos­pel Choir. The gala is in aid of inter­na­tional devel­op­ment char­ity, The .

In cel­eb­ra­tion of World Hun­ger Day 2012, and as major high­light of her 50th Anniversary World Tour, War­wick and her friends will per­form duets and solo per­form­ances of songs that have become part of the soundtrack to all our lives. It will include the instantly recog­nis­able col­lab­or­a­tions with Burt Bachar­ach and Hal David, Barry Manilow and The Bee Gees. It will also be the first oppor­tun­ity for UK audi­ences to hear songs from her latest album Only Trust Your Heart, a cel­eb­ra­tion of the music of Sammy Chan.

The ’s Gary Avis is one of many artists who col­lab­or­ate with The Hun­ger Pro­ject, and on the ’s web­site he states,

I’ve been a pat­ron of The Hun­ger Pro­ject for two very excit­ing years, last year cre­at­ing The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis and Friends gala which raised £50,000 raised for the charity’s valu­able work. As we approach this year’s World Hun­ger Day on May 28th, it’s all hands on deck for our tiny UK staff of two and all volun­teer pat­rons, ambas­sad­ors and trust­ees. I very much hope to see you there!

At the end of May, London’s Royal will host a gala con­cert for World Hun­ger Day 2012.

Dionne Warwick Natalie Cole The Hunger Project 2011 Dionne Warwick, Cliff Richard, Alexandra Burke and Katie Melua among those singing for World Hunger Day 2012The first World Hun­ger Day took place 15 months ago at the Apollo Vic­toria theatre with Dionne War­wick among a star-studded cast, and she is back to lend her sup­port again to an event which will aid the work of The Hun­ger Pro­ject. This year she will be joined by Alex­an­dra Burke, Boy George, Katie Melua and many oth­ers, with rising stars such as Caro Emer­ald and Rumer, as well as golden oldies San­die Shaw and . Tony “Down­town” Hatch will con­duct the orches­tra. Pro­ceeds from the con­cert will dir­ectly bene­fit com­munit­ies in 20,000 vil­lages across Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin Amer­ica all of whom exper­i­ence chronic and per­sist­ent hun­ger.… [con­tinue reading]

Peter Yates, the Brit­ish dir­ector of “Break­ing Away,” “The Dresser” and “Bullitt,” the 1968 Steve McQueen movie whose land­mark car chase sequence over the hilly streets of was a career-defining moment for both dir­ector and star, has died. He was 81.

Yates died Sunday in after an ill­ness, his agent, Judy Daish, said in a state­ment repor­ted by the Asso­ci­ated Press.

In a career that began with the 1963 Cliff Richard pop musical “Sum­mer Hol­i­day,” Yates dir­ec­ted more than two dozen movies, includ­ing “Murphy’s War,” “The Hot Rock,” “The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” “For Pete’s Sake,” “The Deep,” “Mother Jugs & Speed” and “Eyewitness.”

As a dir­ector, Yates received two nom­in­a­tions — for “Break­ing Away,” a light-hearted coming-of-age tale set in Indi­ana; and for “The Dresser,” a 1983 back­stage story set in war­time with Albert Fin­ney as an actor-manager try­ing to keep his com­pany afloat and Tom Court­ney as his ded­ic­ated dresser.… [con­tinue reading]
