DSC4510 332x500 National Ballet of Canada brings Ratmansky’s Romeo and Juliet to LondonThe will perform ’s new production of Romeo and Juliet from tonight, 17 April, until 21 April at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

The ballet has obviously been an audience favourite ever since it came to the National Ballet in 1964, but the company’s new version, by Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, which premiered in 2011 to ecstatic acclaim, only enhances its position in the repertoire. Ratmansky’s work is known for its mastery of the classical vocabulary, yet he is equally adept at employing that vocabulary for fresh, modern effects.

The Globe and Mail said,

In terms of choreography, Ratmansky’s greatness lies in his ability to mirror music in dance. There is absolutely no mime. The emotional arc of the characters is cunningly shown in movement. In fact, the music and the dance seem inseparable… Ratmansky’s vision for Romeo and Juliet works on every level.

The Toronto Star agreed that it’s a winner,

Ratmansky has given them a Romeo and Juliet that puts the ecstasy and anguish of young love front and centre, a Romeo and Juliet with soul.

Now the London press can have their say.

Principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson, who has just completed a Gramilano Questionnaire, will dance Juliet on 19 April, with Guillaume Côté as her Romeo. The Sun commented,

Greta Hodgkinson’s magnificently youthful and innocent Juliet… manages to capture both the tentative awkwardness of a colt and the sleek lines of a thoroughbred in every magical turn.

More information on the National Ballet’s casting and booking information can be found on the Sadler’s Wells site.

strictly gershwin Critics round up: Strictly Gershwin with the English National Ballet at Londons Royal Albert HallDifficult-to-please Clement Crisp gives a four-star crit for the English National Ballet’s dance show “Strictly Gershwin”:

For this show is jolly, welcoming, coasting along on tunes that everyone knows, and it is done with a fine sense of theatre, which has ever been Deane’s forte. In this revival, it is even more slick and brassy than at its first outing in 2008. The company’s dancing is polished, resourceful. All the troupe’s principals are brightly on hand, and former guests – , Guillaume Côté, Friedemann Vogel – are splendidly returned.

The Arts Desk’s Judith Flanders disagrees vehemently:

I can’t remember ever enjoying any theatrical experience less. The Albert Hall is not in any case a place for dance – dance in the round is a contradiction in terms, it simply means everyone has a bad seat.… [continue reading]

Smartphone phởtos linked onto a tweet are a great way to let followers get a glimpse of where you are and what you’re up to. Everyone’s at it from Hollywood stars to football louts. Ballet dancers, creative by nature, are often clicking away and sometimes the results are shared.

Now boys love toys, so most of the tweet-pics are from male dancers. In fact most ballet twitterers are male. The American Ballet Theatre’s David Hallberg (@DavidHallberg) looks reflectively in the mirror (pun intended):

Sofia Rosolini Jewels 338x600 Balanchines Jewels finally sparkle at La ScalaIn less than a fortnight the company has turned out its jewel-box and polished each precious stone. The shambled mess that was meant to be Balanchine’s choreography has become precise, witty and, mainly, as Balanchine probably would have wanted it.

Italy’s most read newspaper, the Corriere della Sera, titled its review “Balanchine’s don’t sparkle at La Scala”. It was true.

The La Scala ballet company has everything a large scale company could wish for, except performance dates. It presents only five programmes during the current season with 50 performances at La Scala and a handful of tour dates. are giving 42 performances in its current six-week spring season alone!

The La Scala company also suffers from a lack of stage rehearsal time which is crucial for a technically demanding evening of Balanchine.… [continue reading]
