Black White Ball Milan 6 375x500 Nuñez and Hallberg début at La Scala, with Zakharova, Osipova, Bolle and VasilievGood news for dance at La Scala. Cutting down on the budget has meant axing three opera productions, but opera’s loss is ballet’s gain, for the ‘cheaper’ ballet performances have been bumped up from 49 this season to a healthier 61.

More guests too will liven up the 2013–2014 season. House fixtures Svetlana Zakharova, and Massimo Murru will be joined by returning guests Polina Semionova and  for Balanchine’s Diamonds, and Natalia Osipova with for Rubies. Osipova and Vasiliev will also dance in Don Quixote later in the season, as well as Zakharova with Denis Matvienko, making a long awaited return, and Leonid Sarafanov will return to Milan as Basilio.

Zakharova and Semionova will also appear in Swan Lake with David Hallberg who will be making his house début. It will be gloves off for Bolle and Vasiliev in the Petit programme where they will alternate in .

The season concludes with MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet with Zakharova and Bolle, Osipova and Vasiliev, and Murru will dance with the ’s Marianela Nuñez, who has been to La Scala to watch her on and off-stage partner Thiago Soares dance, but will be making her début with the company.

BBdW xPCAAATp h 333x500 Ivan Vasiliev drives Milan wild in his La Scala début’s scheduled début with the ballet company at ’s , and also in the role of Quasimodo in ’s ballet , was delayed from Saturday due to a last minute injury. Yesterday, however, he went on and scored a success that a loggionista described as one of the supreme ballet evenings in the last forty years at Milan’s opera house. She compared the presence of Vasiliev with that of Nureyev: personalities that draw attention towards them, even when they are not dancing and the intended focus of the choreography. Such artists are indeed rare.

Italian blogger and balletomane Marino Palleschi commented,

At 24 years of age, is it possible to have understood all of Romanticism?… [continue reading]

Claudio Coviello 500x375 Ivan Vasilievs injury gives unknown Claudio Coviello a chance to shineWhile it wasn’t exactly a case of ‘A Star is Born’, 21-year-old was certainly given a golden opportunity when Ivan Vasiliev couldn’t go on at last night.

Coviello had learnt the role of Quasimodo in Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris for just a single matinée performance. The evening spots were taken by Roberto Bolle, and Ivan Vasiliev. Except for Murru this was début time for everybody.

Vasiliev, made-up and ready to take on the role for the first time, as well as making his first appearance at Milan’s famed opera house, was limbering up on stage half an hour before the curtain. Landing after a jump he felt pain in his back, and after quick consultations with specialists, it was decided that he couldn’t go on.… [continue reading]

He was already in make-up for his role as the Hunchback in ’s Notre-Dame de Paris, when half-an-hour before curtain up he realised he couldn’t go on.

21-year-old who had danced the role at the matinée performance stepped in. As the announcement was made in the theatre wails arrived from all parts of the house with cries of “No!”. It is to young Coviello’s credit that the cries turned to cheers by the end of his first solo. His Esmeralda was rising young Italian star Petra Conti, who danced the role superbly, and her real life partner, , played her stage suitor in apt heroic fashion.… [continue reading]

The  Theater scored a coup last fall by luring Natalia Osipova and from the Bolshoi, and it was to have brought them to the United States this summer for a run of shows at Lincoln Center, said Arts Beat.

Now those plans have been scrapped because American Ballet Theater has exercised a no-compete clause involving the pair. Osipova and Vasiliev also dance with ABT – Osipova as a principal and Vasiliev as a guest.

The Mikhailovsky had plans to perform at the David H. Koch Theater from June 19 to July 1, while ABT is scheduled to perform at the Metropolitan Opera house around the same time.

The ABT’s artistic director, , said that the company would not release Osipova and Vasiliev from a clause barring its members from performing nearby.… [continue reading]
