While Decca keep us guessing at the content of , ’s new album, their press release gives out a lot of information already:

Autumn 2012 marks the release of Mission, a sensational new album from the world’s best-selling classical artist, Cecilia Bartoli, and a project with international politics, religious conflict, diplomatic secrecy, spying and sensational music at its heart.

The album showcases the music of a little-known Italian composer and will include solo arias of various moods and styles, several duets, solo numbers with chorus — all sung in Italian — and instrumental interludes that create an organic transition from one piece to the next and an arc that reaches from the beginning to the end of the album.… [continue reading]

He might not have the voice of or but Marilyn Manson goth Andrew De Leon certainly gives a moving performance of ’s “O mio babbino caro” and his story is almost unbelieveable.

bartoli rocket Cecilia Bartolis Giulio Cesare in Egitto: boos for the production, cheers for the cast’s well thought out programming for her first year as director of Salzburg’s Whitsun Festival was thematic, inspired by the lady of the asp, Cleopatra. The climax of the festival was a new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto, with la Bartoli as the iconic Egyptian queen. The casting was superb and aurally everything was splendid, but the production was the biggest load of bosh I’ve seen in ages.

Directors Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, faithful Bartoli collaborators from Zurich, have put together a production which is (presumably intentionally) anti-aesthetic. Fine. Let’s have scenery that looks as though stagehands have left bits lying around after a storeroom clearout; props, furniture and costumes that seem to have been chosen at random from a thrift shop; lighting which casts shadows haphazardly across the stage and cast.… [continue reading]

ercole Vivaldis Ercole sul Termodonte with Rolando Villazón and Joyce DiDonato: release date 29th NovemberAvailable on CD and for mp3 download. With a cast that also includes Diana Damrau, , and Patrizia Ciofi it should be as exciting as Biondi’s Bajazet.

Hercules reborn! and lead a dazzling cast in Vivaldi’s opera Ercole sul Termodonte, first heard in Rome in 1723 and reconstructed by conductor Fabio Biondi from the original libretto, historical scores and his intimate knowledge of the composer.

Like the mythical Hercules, hero of this opera by Vivaldi, dynamic tenor Rolando Villazón has triumphed over some huge challenges, including an operation in 2009 on his vocal cords.

In this, his first complete studio recording of an opera for Virgin Classics, he takes on the title role of Hercules (Ercole), whose is to obtain the belt of the Amazon queen Hippolyta (Ippolita).… [continue reading]
