Moscow Bolshoi Theare Rite of Spring at the Bolshoi: Béjart, Bausch, and Wayne McGregors new version for the Bolshoi BalletThe has announced its 2012–2013 season and touring schedule.

’s Teatro alla Scala will kick off the season on September 6 with Robert Carsen’s acclaimed production of Don Giovanni which opened La Scala’s season last year. The Italian presence continues with Pier Luigi Pizzi’s new production for the Bolshoi of Bellini’s La Somnambula with American soprano Laura Claycomb. The six new opera productions also include Borodin’s Prince Igor, to be staged by legendary theatre director Yuri Lyubimov (class of 1917!)

The big event in the ballet calender is a mini-festival around Easter 2012 to mark the centenary of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. This will bring together four versions of the ballet by the Finnish National Ballet, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, the Pina Bausch Dance Theatre, and the itself.

Bolshoi Ballet Artistic Director in a press conference said,

In addition, the companies will present some pieces from their current repertoire… We will prepare our own new version of “The Rite” which will be choreographed by .”

The Bolshoi Ballet will also embark on a three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand in toward the end of the season, followed by its traditional Covent Garden residency July and August 2012. Filin noted,

Our full-length classical ballets continue to arouse great interest. Foreign theaters either do not have them at all or have abridged versions. Full-length, lavishly designed, pompous classical productions with a huge corps-de-ballet are always the most wanted. Only Covent Garden asked to bring new one-act ballets for the London public to see what our interests are like and what young dancers we have, as well as our current opportunities and prospects for the future.

Elīna Garanča La Scala 2012 Elīna Garanča triumphs at her La Scala débutDébuts at Milan’s Opera House are notoriously tricky. In opera, singers worry about possible boos showering down from the famous loggionisti, though for a recital that isn’t likely to happen. ’s début was to have been in opera at the season’s inauguration in ’s Don Giovanni, but as she was pregnant she had to cancel. So last night’s recital marked her first appearance at La Scala and her ease on this legendary stage was extraordinary:  was visibly shaking at the start of her recital.

A well chosen programme of German lied showed off her glorious, warm, mezzo voice, and her seriousness as an artist. Schumann’s Frauenliebe und –leben lieder were touching and varied, Sieben frühe Lieder proved her precise technique as she fearlessly walked Alban Berg’s high-wire of intonation, and with the Strauss lieder she seemed truly at home.… [continue reading]

Anna Netrebko Elina Garanca BELLINI I Capuleti e i Montecchi Gabo La Scalas 2011 2012 opera and ballet season announcedLa Scala held a press conference this morning to announce its 2011–2012 season.

How times, and timing, have changed. Just ten years ago the season was being presented in late June, with roles “to be announced” and events “to be confirmed”. Italians are resigned to their fate: inefficiency — like corrupt politicians — is the norm, so with a shrug of the shoulders they say “povera Italia” and get on with their lives. Well there’s nothing like a recession, coupled with a French General Director, to shake things up.

La Scala has been acting more like a music festival of late, with lots of niche operas and a dirth of world-class singers. The buzz among season ticket holders is that the big names are afraid of the infamous La Scala loggionisti, the booers up in the gods. … [continue reading]
