Pereira 500x330 Pereira to head La Scala: career and love come together in MilanOctober 2015 marks the start of Alexander Pereira’s reign as sovrintendente of one of the world’s greatest theatres, the Teatro alla Scala in .

Yesterday the city’s mayor, Giuliano Pisapia, announced the Austrian’s appointment,

He is the person we consider most suited to give true value to the jewel in Milan’s crown.

So, coincidentally  just as his present contract at Salzburg expires he will arrive in Milan. But he is no stranger to the town. He worked for Olivetti for twelve years and has an apartment near the theatre. His 25-year-old girlfriend is a fashion student at Milan’s Istituto Marangoni. He speaks Italian fluently which gives him a big boost over ’s current director, the Frenchman , who arrived with very little Italian, and still insists on calling his place of work ‘La ScalA’ instead of ‘La ScAla’. Most of all, Pereira is famous for fundraising and keeping the budget in the black, a priority now for every opera house in the world.

The Culture Minister, Ilaria Borletti Buitoni, said,

This choice demonstrates the will to reward competence and managerial skills in a role crucial for the future of a theatre which, like all such institutions, struggles to balance the books.

The separatist Lega Nord, which now govern the Province of Lombardy, were strongly against the appointment. Matteo Salvini said,

They’ve killed the theatre. La Scala has been sold off according to the logic of business and obeying foreign lobbyists. Those who love Milan must shout, “No!”.

Pereira is delighted. He told Il Corriere della Sera newspaper,

I shall start working for La Scala tonight. Immediately.

He will be paid to work, however, from 2015, but he will receive 25% less than his predecessor: €260,000 a year. To balance the fact that he is Austrian, he wants to find an Italian music director to follow outgoing Daniel Barenboim.

I will try and choose a musical director as soon as possible. To function well the chief executive and music director must work very closely together.

Pereira is also known for his love of Italian opera.

When I was the head of , I was criticized for my passion for Italian opera. They accused me of favouring the repertory of the south instead of that from the northern theatres. I love Italian opera, and I’ll try to highlight it as much as possible.

La Scala Milan Stéphane Lissner to leave La Scala for the Paris Opera in 2015After the rumours and denials of recent days, Aurélie Filippetti, the French Minister of Culture, has confirmed that  will take over from Nicolas Joel when the latter leaves the helm of the Paris Opera in 2015.

Lissner’s very lucrative contract as Sovrintendente of Milan’s was due to expire in 2017. However recently his programming has been upsetting many of Milan’s season ticket holders who are fed up with paying a fortune for a fixed seat in the house to assist minimalist productions with mini-skirts and trench-coats. A protest group had recently been formed.

However Lissner did manage to reign in the extravagant spending of the years, and put the balance sheet in order. This is precisely what will be needed in Paris after the recent cuts.… [continue reading]

Guillem Manon 2011 Sylvie Guillem on why shes still Mademoiselle NonSylive Guillem will be in Venice tomorrow to receive from the Biennale  the Leone d’oro  (Golden Lion) for “having redesigned the form of the dancer, defying the laws of physics”.

Valeria Crippa  of the Corriere della Sera talked to her about aspects of her career.

I could have ended up like a cork bobbing along on the water at the whim of the currents. Instead I preferred to take the helm and steer my life into the open sea and its storms.

When Nureyev nominated me étoile at the Paris Opera when I was 19 it would have been, for many dancers, the maximum aspiration, but not for me. It was only the beginning of a dream that I’m still living through.… [continue reading]

opera logos Vienna Opera and La Scala exchange goes ahead tomorrowA much-anticipated exchange between the Vienna Opera and Milan’s will go ahead despite earlier fears it might be cancelled because of a strike.

Two unions at the Milan opera house — Cgil and Uil — had threatened to strike tomorrow, because of proposed changes to staff contracts announced earlier this year, thereby cancelling the performance by the . But after talks with the management, the trade unionists agreed not to go ahead with the protest action.

Tomorrow’s performances mark a renewal in traditional exchanges between La Scala and the Vienna Staatsoper. The last exchange between the two world-famous opera houses — both currently led by Frenchmen: Stephane Lissner in Milan and Dominique Meyer in Vienna — goes back to 1956 when the Staatsoper’s Herbert von Karajan invited soprano Maria Callas and La Scala’s orchestra to perform “Lucia di Lammermoor” in Vienna.… [continue reading]

Anna Netrebko Elina Garanca BELLINI I Capuleti e i Montecchi Gabo La Scalas 2011 2012 opera and ballet season announcedLa Scala held a press conference this morning to announce its 2011–2012 season.

How times, and timing, have changed. Just ten years ago the season was being presented in late June, with roles “to be announced” and events “to be confirmed”. Italians are resigned to their fate: inefficiency — like corrupt politicians — is the norm, so with a shrug of the shoulders they say “povera Italia” and get on with their lives. Well there’s nothing like a recession, coupled with a French General Director, to shake things up.

La Scala has been acting more like a music festival of late, with lots of niche operas and a dirth of world-class singers. The buzz among season ticket holders is that the big names are afraid of the infamous La Scala loggionisti, the booers up in the gods. … [continue reading]
