Darcey Bussell Sanctuary Spa campaign Darcey Bussell rises like a phoenix after depression down underNobody could have failed to be moved by ’s farewell to the stage in 2007. It seemed more an outpouring of grief than a sad farewell. She told The Sunday Times,

My God, I cracked. I just wanted to do the show really well, so that I’d be happy to finish. But I just bawled. It was pathetic.

Bussell then set off with her husband and children to Australia. But she wasn’t ready to leave dance and .

I got depressed. I didn’t appreciate how low I got. My husband did. He said, ‘You know, Darcey, you’re better when you’re busy.’ I thought it was weakness to show you couldn’t cope.

How very British. She sums up her stiff upper lip attitude:

You still have to get on with the show. I had friends who wouldn’t smile for a whole day, but I had been brought up not to make other people feel bad just because you do.

It was dance that got Darcey smiling as she started classes again in Australia.

As soon as I was moving, I was happy. It didn’t have to be about perfection. There are so many styles to enjoy.

Now the family have moved back to London and she is slowly returning in the public eye. She has become president of the Royal Academy of Dance, the first ever face of the new anti-ageing Sanctuary Spa skincare range, and is on the judging panel on .

Next up she’ll be in front of the biggest audience of her career. Billions of people. Playing a phoenix, she will rise during the Olympic closing ceremony, doing what she was born to do… dance.

Worldwide is suing an Italian television network owned by over claims that it has copied . A hearing is due to take place on tomorrow about a new show called Baila!, which is set to debut on Mediaset’s Canale 5 later this month.

BBC Worldwide contends it copies Strictly’s concept, which has been called the most successful reality format in the world. Mediaset has denied the accusations.

In a statement to BBC News, Mediaset said: “This is perhaps the first time in the history of television that an accusation of plagiarism is levelled against a programme that hasn’t even yet been broadcast. It will be the judge to make the final decision, but Mediaset remains convinced that Baila!… [continue reading]

In the Evening Standard, Sarah Frater gives her A-Z guide to ’s booming dance scene:

When and Tamara Rojo step out onto the O2 stage to dance Romeo and Juliet next June, they will be watched by a whopping 10,000 people. There are four shows of the ever-popular weepie, meaning 40,000 could see the ballet, and that’s excluding the fifth performance aimed at schools. Ballet is rarely seen on such a scale, and The ’s bold move confirms the current boom in dance, which has gone from art’s ugly duckling to its very elegant swan.

To all the baby boomers who were in love with cheeky Felicity Kendal in the classic 70s comedy The Good Life, seeing her still going strong as a contestant has been a real pleasure. Well now she’s been voted out, here’s my, and the Telegraph’s, little hooray for Felicity…

Proving that age is no barrier to pulling the splits or gyrating indecently with a young man in tight white trousers, Felicity Kendal has been an inspiring presence on Strictly Come Dancing.

At an age when many women would be taking to beige slacks and bed slippers, the 64-year-old has squeezed herself into sequins and stilettos for a creditable series which kept her in the competition until the eighth week.… [continue reading]
