james franco James Franco pulls out of Broadway début with Nicole Kidman will not be mak­ing his Broad­way debut in ’ Sweet Bird of Youth this autumn. The 127 Hours star had been set to appear oppos­ite in the play, which tells of an age­ing act­ress and the gigolo who exploits her. Franco’s pub­li­cist did not state why the 33-year-old was no longer involved.

Sweet Bird of Youth had been one of most anti­cip­ated plays this sea­son because of Franco and Kidman’s involve­ment. In an inter­view with the New York Times, how­ever, dir­ector David Cromer said the revival would now not hap­pen this autumn.

The ori­ginal Broad­way pro­duc­tion of Sweet Bird of Youth opened in March 1959 star­ring Ger­aldine Page and . The play, which ran for 10 months and was nom­in­ated for sev­eral Tony awards, was later made into a film with the two act­ors repris­ing their Broad­way roles.

Tennessee Williams, the tormented playwright who unzipped his heartToday would have been Ten­nessee Wil­li­ams’ 100th birth­day, and there are many pro­jects in the pip­line to cel­eb­rate the fact, includ­ing the starry Sud­denly Next Sum­mer on Broad­way in the autumn with  and . have ded­ic­ated a long art­icle to the great man:

– argu­ably the greatest of Amer­ican dram­at­ists – would have notched up his 100th birth­day on 26 March. He was born Thomas Lan­ier Wil­li­ams III in Colum­bus, Mis­sis­sippi in 1911. His mother, Edwina, was the daugh­ter of an Epis­co­palian min­is­ter, his father, Cor­nelius, was a woman­ising and hard-drinking trav­el­ling sales­man for a shoe com­pany. Borkman Sarting on Broadway tonight: Alan Rickman, Fiona Shaw, Lindsay Duncan and Olympia DukakisThe Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Any­more gets an Off-Broadway revival start­ing tonight, 7 Janu­ary. win­ner Olympia Duka­kis plays Flora Goforth, a widow pen­ning her memoirs.

Michael Wilson dir­ects the Round­about Theatre Com­pany sta­ging at its Off-Broadway home at the Laura Pels Theatre. Per­form­ances play until 3 April.

Also start­ing tonight is The Abbey Theatre pro­duc­tion of Hen­rik Ibsen’s pen­ul­tim­ate work, John Gab­riel Bork­man, star­ring Alan Rick­man, Fiona Shaw and Lind­say Duncan, at the , and con­tin­ues until 6 February.
