Dear World Playbill 1969 Betty Buckley to star in Jerry Hermans Dear World in the West EndEveryone who knows and loves the original cast recording of Jerry Herman’s musical Dear World will be delighted to have the opportunity to see it when it comes to the London stage next year.

It  will receive its British première at the Charing Cross Theatre with Betty Buckley in the title role — which created in 1969 — and Paul Nicholas. It will be directed and choreographed by the miraculous Gillian Lynne (Cats, Phantom) who will turn 87 during the show’s limited run.

Although Dear World won a Tony for Lansbury as Best Actress in a Musical it was not a commercial success and ran for only 132 performances. The London production will run from 13 February to 30 March 2013.

Dear World is based on Jean Giraudoux’s play The Madwoman of Chaillot, which gave Lansbury great scope and the make-up team a lot of fun. Now –winner Betty Buckley is to get her teeth into the role which, on paper, should suit her perfectly. She has already tackled a similar character when playing Norma Desmond in ’s  in the West End.

Buckley and her co-star Paul Nicholas have a Cats connection as both were in original casts, though not in the same city:  Nicholas created the role of Rum Tum Tugger in London, while Buckley was the first Grizabella on Broadway. There’s even a number in Dear World called ‘Memory’… but not that one.

The Broadway musical “Billy Elliot”, winner of 10 Tony Awards in 2009 and a hot ticket for much of its run, will close on January 8, 2012, after 3 years and 3 months of performances.

The decision to close came after a somewhat precipitous decline in ticket sales that accelerated through the late spring and summer amid competition from new musicals like “The Book of Mormon” and “ Queen of the Desert”, hit revivals like “Anything Goes” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”, and “Memphis”, the durable recipient of the 2010 Tony for best musical.

“Billy Elliot” was one of the most successful musicals in in recent years, earning back its capitalization of $18 million – a high figure for Broadway – in just 14 months.… [continue reading]

Judy Kaye Judy Kaye is Mrs Madrigal in the Tales of the City musicalBroadway’s Judy Kaye, star of “Ragtime” and “On the Twentieth Century,” winner of a 1988 for “Phantom of the Opera” is about to tackle a new role in a new musical. Rumours from the try-outs in are very positive, and Kaye too is excited about playing Anna Madrigal in the world première musical “Tales of the City.”

The show started previews last week and will officially open on June 1. She was interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle. Here are three of the questions posed:

ian rickson mark rylance The Economist talks to Tony nominee Mark RylanceMark Rylance is currently starring in Jerusalem at the Music Box Theatre in . A majestic performance that has garnered him a Tony nomination for best actor. When I worked with him at ’s on Britten’s , he played the non-singing role of Puck — brilliantly. A massive hi-tech pyramid structure was no problem for him physically as he swung and slithered around its aluminium poles with a demonic expression in his eyes. Physicality is important to Rylance.

I like very much the kabuki actors and their physicality - he told The Economist in a long interview about his craft. How clear they are, how expressive they are vocally and physically—the parameters are much wider for them than our naturalism.… [continue reading]
