Kinder Aggugini ENB Kinder Aggugini designs ballet costumes for MacMillans The Rite of SpringBritish reports that Kinder Aggugini is teaming up with the to redesign the costumes for ’s The , during the Beyond Ballets Russes season at the in March 2012.

Kinder is an intriguing character. An Italian Ex-punk, he studied at St. Martins during the 1980′s and worked on Savile row before moving to John Galliano (where he applied for the job dressed as a policeman). He also worked at Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Calvin Klein, Costume National and as a head designer for Versace following the death of Gianni. He told Vogue,

I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to redesign MacMillan’s ballet. The guidelines for ballet costumes are quite strict, so on top of an appearance one has to consider functionality and durability.”

After having created a one-off tutu for the English National Ballet’s company’s fundraising summer party in July last year, he was approached by the company’s artistic director Wayne Eagling to meet MacMillan’s widow to discuss The Rite of Spring redesign.

I guess it’s a bit like designing a Batman outfit, but in this case there was also a clear vision from one of the most revered British choreographers who created possibly the most successful version of this Ballets Russes piece. This is what makes this project so special — it’s not just a costume, it’s the resurgence of an iconic work of art.”

He also plays the violin quite well, and that distinguished font of musical criticism, Classic FM called him “one of the most exciting young violin talents around”.

The Times reveiwing his 2008 Elgar recording said, “Charlie Siem unusual is his emotional control – so firm, and so British, that it bites into the power of his otherwise fluent account of Elgar’s Violin Sonata”.

His third album, with the , is out at the end of September with concertos by Henryk Wieniawski and Max Bruch and a piece by Olé Bull.… [continue reading]

norman parkinson image 441x600 A new book on Norman Parkinson: Portraits in Fashion Described as “a bit flash” by his contemporary and rival , the British phởtographer Norman Parkinson was never one for reticence. His flamboyant, ebullient style of shooting earned him a 37-year alliance with magazine, at a time when it was more usual to buy in work from American and European phởtographers than to commission on home soil.

Parkinson, who later owned a pig farm that sold sausages and lived out his dotage on a Caribbean island, cultivated eccentricity throughout his 70-year career. He favoured an “exaggerated personal style”, Robin Muir tells us in his excellent Norman Parkinson: Portraits in (Palazzo, £14.99), including “a Byronic cricketing outfit and a big, snow white, last days of the Empire moustache”.… [continue reading]
