Didn’t get a ticket for Diana Damrau’s gig at (le) Poisson Rouge tomorrow? Well, it has been sold out for weeks. Happily, there’s an alternative, because the recital, with music from her delightful new album Forever, will be streamed live.
(le) Poisson Rouge, or LPR, is the New York music venue on the site of the historic Village Gate, where you can catch Daniel Barenboim and Debbie Harry (though not together), Jovanotti and Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed and Philip Glass, Yoko Ono and Steve Reich, Thomas Adés and Patti Smith. Now to this eclectic group of musicians the name of one of the top operatic sopranos will be added.
Her Forever album features songs from musicals, operetta and movies, which she sings with great nonchalance and naturalness, avoiding that awkward ‘crossover’ sound. She’s not afraid to punch out those chest notes, and uses the lyrics with wit and clarity. The intimate and informal atmosphere of LPR is the perfect setting for her to present these songs, so note the date: Thursday, March 27th at 7:30PM EST. You can watch it on this site, or connect to the Livestream page.
