When did you start dancing?
I started dancing when I was four.
Why did you start dancing?
My uncle was a dancer and ran a ballet school, so I'm sure that I began dancing because I was curious about his world. Also, I had slight scoliosis and was told I should try dancing.
Which dancer inspired you most as a child?
There were many, but Baryshnikov for me is the essence of what I mean when I think of dance as an art form.
Which dancer do you most admire?
Mikhail Baryshnikov.
What's your favourite role?
There are many roles that I have loved but I feel the most emotions when playing Romeo.
What role have you never played but would like to?
I still have many roles left to attempt, and one of them until recently was Don Josè in Amedeo Amodio's Carmen, which I got to dance in Cremona. I would love to dance Onegin. I have played Lensky, but as I mature, I feel I could now play the leading role.
What's your favourite ballet to watch?
Romeo and Juliet.
Who is your favourite choreographer?
There are many excellent choreographers who have made dance history, but I'm very close to Amedeo Amodio, an Italian choreographer who has created some masterpieces! Collaborating with him has been one of the most important parts of my career.
Who is your favourite writer?
Paulo Coelho.
Who is your favourite theatre or cinema director?
There I so many directors I love, especially cinema directors, and Steven Spielberg is one of my favourites.
Who is your favourite actor?
Robert De Niro, maybe, but I have so many.
Who is your favourite singer?
Pino Daniele and Lucio Dalla!
What is your favourite book?
Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho.
What is your favourite film?
Indiana Jones – Back to the Future.
Which is your favourite city?
Naples.
What do you like most about yourself?
My optimism.
What do you dislike about yourself?
Among my many flaws, maybe the fact of being a little touchy is the thing I like the least.
What was your proudest moment?
All those times I've managed to succeed thanks to the teachers I've known and my hard work have made me very proud.
When and where were you happiest?
The happiest moment in my career was when after many experiences in other theatres I managed to return to the place I was born, that is Teatro San Carlo in Naples, which has now witnessed the main part of my career.
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
The love of my life is my partner, who has supported me in everything: Anbeta Toromani.
What is your greatest fear?
Change makes me afraid, but it's part of life.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
As far as my life is concerned, I like and accept myself with all my strengths and weaknesses; therefore, I wouldn't want to change anything.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
I have always worked hard and with great passion, and everything that I've achieved is thanks to my dedication, which for me is an achievement.
What is your most treasured possession?
I have a sailing boat, and it's certainly my most treasured possession… it's freedom!
What is your greatest extravagance?
I don't have any extravagant habits.
What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
We are never virtuous enough.
On what occasion do you lie?
I've sometimes told a white lie to not upset people who are dear to me, but I'm trying to stop.
If you hadn't been a dancer what would you have liked to be?
I would have liked to be a musician, or maybe a sailor.
What is your most marked characteristic?
My Neapolitanism.
What quality do you most value in a friend?
Sincerity.
What quality do you most value in a colleague?
Fairness.
Which historical figure do you most admire?
Abraham Lincoln.
Which living person do you most admire?
Maestro Amedeo Amodio.
What do you most dislike?
Ignorance.
What talent would you most like to have?
More than talent, I would like to be able to deepen my understanding of my work so that I'll be able to communicate this to younger dancers.
What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Happiness is that we have been given life, and we can find it everywhere… it's difficult to appreciate this fact.
How would you like to die?
I don't want to die…

Quando hai iniziato a danzare?
Ho iniziato a studiare danza a 4 anni.
Perché hai iniziato a danzare?
Mio zio era un danzatore e aveva una scuola di danza ed io ho iniziato li sicuramente perché ero affascinato dal suo mondo e poi perché avevo un po' di scoliosi e mi avevano raccomandato di fare danza.
Quale danzatore ti ha più ispirato da piccolo?
Ce ne sono stati tanti ma Baryshnikov per me è la sintesi di quello che intendo quando penso alla danza in quanto arte.
Quale danzatore ammiri di più?
Mikhail Baryshnikov.
Qual è il tuo ruolo preferito?
Sono stati tanti i ruoli che ho amato ma sicuramente Romeo è stato il ruolo più emozionante per me.
Quale ruolo non hai mai interpretato ma vorresti o avresti voluto danzare?
Be' sono tanti i ruoli ancora non interpretati uno di questi è Don Josè in Carmen in cui però a breve debutterò nella versione di Amedeo Amodio a Cremona. Un altro ruolo che mi piacerebbe molto è Onegin di Cranko. Anni fa, ho gia ballato Lensky, ma adesso con la maturità mi piacerebbe molto poter danzare Onegin.
Quale balletto non ti stanchi mai di vedere?
Romeo e Giulietta!
Chi è il tuo coreografo preferito?
Ci sono tanti coreografi bravissimi e che hanno fatto la storia, io sono molto legato al Maestro Amedeo Amodio un coreografo Italiano che ha creato dei capolavori assoluti! Lui è stato uno degli incontri più importanti della mia vita artistica..
Scrittore preferito?
Paulo Coelho.
Regista teatrale o cinematografico?
Ci sono tanti registi che mi piacciono soprattutto cinematografici… Steven Spielberg è sicuramente uno dei miei preferiti.

Robert De Niro forse ma ne ho tanti di preferiti!

Cosa ti piace di più di te stesso?
Il mio ottimismo.
Cosa non ti piace di te stesso?
Tra i tanti difetti forse il fatto di essere permaloso è la cosa che mi piace meno.
Qual è stato il momento di cui sei più orgoglioso?
Tutto quello che sono riuscito a conquistare grazie ai Maestri che ho conosciuto e al mio lavoro, mi ha reso tante volte orgoglioso.
Dove e quando ti sei sentito più felice?
Il momento più felice per me (lavorativamente) è quando dopo varie esperienze in altri teatri sono riuscito a tornare nel posto in cui sono nato ovvero il Teatro San Carlo di Napoli dove ho fatto la maggior parte della mia carriera.
Cosa o chi è il più grande amore della tua vita?
L'amore della mia vita è la mia compagna che mi sopporta e mi supporta in tutto! Anbeta Toromani.
Qual è la cosa di cui hai più paura?
I cambiamenti mi fanno paura…. ma fanno parte della vita.
Se potessi, cosa cambiaresti di te?
A questo punto della mia vita mi piaccio e mi accetto con pregi e difetti quindi forse non cambierei niente.
Cosa consideri il tuo più grande successo?
Ho sempre la vorato tanto con immensa passione e tutto quello che è arrivato grazie al mio impegno per me è un successo.
Qual è il tuo oggetto di cui tieni di più?
Ho una barca a vela, è sicuramente la cosa a cui tengo di più… è libertà.
Qual è la tua abitudine più stravagante?
Non ho abitudini stravaganti.
Quale virtù ti sembra più sopravvalutata?
Non si è mai abbastanza virtuosi.
In quale situazione dici una bugia?
Qualche volta ho detto qualche bugia bianca per non far dispiacere le persone care… ma sto cercando di smettere.
Se non fossi stato un danzatore cosa ti sarebbe piaciuto fare?
Mi sarebbe piaciuto fare il musicista oppure navigare.
Cos'è la tua più evidente caratteristica?
La Napoletanità.
La qualità che apprezzi di più in un amico?
La sincerità.
La qualità che apprezzi di più in un collega?
La correttezza.
Il personaggio storico che ammiri di più?
Abramo Lincoln.
La persona vivente che ammiri di più?
Il Maestro Amedeo Amodio.
Cosa non sopporti?
L'ignoranza.
Quale talento ti piacerebbe avere?
Più che talento mi piacerebbe approfondire ancora di più il mio lavoro cosi da poterlo trasmettere a giovani danzatori.
Qual è la tua idea di perfetta felicità?
La felicità secondo me è nel dono della vita, possiamo trovarla in tutte le cose… il difficile è comprendere questa verità.
Come vorresti morire?
Non vorrei morire…
Qual è il tuo motto?
Il mio motto è: “Meglio farlo e poi pentirsi che non farlo e poi pentirsi.”
