Juan Diego Flórez releases first album on Florez Records: “Zarzuela”
Juan Diego Flórez releases the first album on his new record label, Florez Records. Zarzuela sees the Peruvian tenor returning to the lyrical genre through which he first approached opera. The project is close to his heart as it involves the Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra and Choir, artistic ensembles over which he presides. He has been working for 13 years with this organisation to transform the lives of thousands of Peruvian children and young people through collective and free musical practice.
The album was recorded in January 2024 at the Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima and is conducted by Guillermo García Calvo. It offers a selection of some of the most famous Zarzuela romanzas for tenor, dating from the end of the 19th and 20th century, most of which Juan Diego Flórez has performed in concerts worldwide throughout his career.
The release will coincide with a European tour – Teatro Real in Madrid (19 September), the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona (21 September), the Wiener Konzerthaus (24 September), the Victoria Hall in Geneva (27 September) and the Philharmonie de Paris (30 September), where Juan Diego Flórez will perform accompanied by Colombian conductor Ana María Patiño-Osorio and the Youth Orchestra of Sinfonía por el Perú.
The Sinfonía por el Perú Youth Orchestra and Choir undertook their first tour of Europe in 2022 accompanying Juan Diego Flórez in performances at the three most important festivals in Central Europe – the Salzburg Festival, the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and the Lucerne Festival. The Youth Choir has also toured Chile in 2023 and Austria this year. The choir won First Place in the Mixed Choir category at the 2024 Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna, Austria.

Graham Spicer, aka ‘Gramilano’, is a writer, director and photographer based in Milan. He was a regular columnist for Opera Now magazine and wrote for the BBC until transferring to Italy. His articles have appeared in various publications from Woman’s Weekly to Gay Times, and he wrote the Danza in Italia column for Dancing Times magazine. Graham was the historical advisor on Codice Carla, the 2023 documentary on Italian ballerina Carla Fracci.
Graham also works as a dance photographer, and his photos have appeared in many books, theatre programmes, and magazines, including Dancing Times, Dance Spirit and Ballet2000, as well as all the major Italian newspapers.
He is a member of the Dance Section of The Critics’ Circle.
