Daniel Barenboim’s contract as a musical director of Berlin’s state opera house has been extended by a further a 10 years, the city authorities announced today.
68-year-old Barenboim has been musical director of the German capital’s showcase opera house and its orchestra the Berlin Staatskapelle since 1992. His current contract was due to expire in 2012. He’s now guaranteed of a job until he’s 78!
‘His outstanding service to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the city of Berlin are undisputed,’ said Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit announcing the extension of Barenboim’s contract.
