Natalia Osipova and Steven McRae in La Fille mal gardée in cinema
The Royal Ballet‘s audiences never tire of La Fille mal gardée, and seemingly neither do the cinema audiences as the ballet will be transmitted live again. On Tuesday 5 May, the world will have the opportunity of seeing not only Steven McRae (who danced with Roberta Marquez in the live broadcast in 2012), but also Natalia Osipova who will be making her role début on 23 April; an exciting combination. This run should have also seen a début as Colas for Valentino Zucchetti – a dancer surely made to dance this role – but unfortunately an injury has forced him to withdraw.
Other débuts include Vadim Muntagirov as Colas, and Jonathan Howells and Thomas Whitehead will try on Widow Simone’s clogs for the first time.

Graham Spicer, aka ‘Gramilano’, is a writer, director and photographer based in Milan. He was a regular columnist for Opera Now magazine and wrote for the BBC until transferring to Italy. His articles have appeared in various publications from Woman’s Weekly to Gay Times, and he wrote the Danza in Italia column for Dancing Times magazine. Graham was the historical advisor on Codice Carla, the 2023 documentary on Carla Fracci.
Graham also works as a dance photographer, and his photos have appeared in many books, theatre programmes, and magazines, including Dancing Times, Dance Spirit and Ballet2000, as well as all the major Italian newspapers.
He is a member of the Dance Section of The Critics’ Circle.
