The great Bolshoi ballerina, Maria Alexandrova, has suddenly, and surprisingly, announced via Instagram, that she is leaving the company she has always danced with:
My dear beloved colleagues and spectators I want to say heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you for this amazing story we shared together in Bolshoi. But this great part of my life is over. I took the decision to turn this page. Artist's place is on stage, the rest is just an illusion and unnecessary soul-devastating dither. I thank my professors N.L. Semizorova and V.S. Lagunov for all attention, talent, respect and love for our profession that they taught me until last minutes and last note that was played tonight!!!! I thank greatly my beloved and unforgettable Tatiana Nikolaevna Golikova, who's part will always live in me and with me! Life goes on, and I have many interesting and important adventures ahead of me! I wish you all luck and patience! Always yours Masha Alexandrova
The 38 year-old, is probably aching to dance, and the opportunities – especially after the injury in London which put her out of action for several months – have been dwindling. By saying that an “artist's place is on stage” she is probably implying that she will take another route to get back in the spotlight; maybe with another company? After the surprised reactions on Instagram and the many good wishes, she reassured her fans that she will continue dancing:
Dear all, my beloved friends! Let me express my deepest gratitude. I could not neither expect nor imagine that my decision will trigger such an emotional response. Emotions of pain and disappointment, of support and protection, of worry and anxiety, of hope and of LOVE. I want all of you to know that I left the Bolshoi but not the profession. I look forward to open the whole world for myself. I ask all spectators for forgiveness for not being open enough, not attentive enough and that I never let myself rely upon you before. But now I know how great of a force the loving public can be. I can't thank you enough for this. Always yours.

I would love to see her dance again!
Read your comment .. Interesting!!
I am so sorry to hear this. She was on exquisite form in London last summer.
It is understandable to exit with grace at the top of your form. Without injury.
It is sad that she is leaving Bolshoi, and I hope she will not give up dancing but move to another company. She still has some good years of dancing ahead of her. I read about her departure few days ago, and I was hoping for an explanation. Anyway, good luck to her in all her future projects.
It’s a saddening news, ms Alexandrova is an exquisite dancer, the best Raymonda I ever had the chance to see.
I’m a little out of touch with the goings-on at the Bolshoi, but I was surprised to see Alexandrova in class yesterday during World Ballet Day. I checked the Bolshoi website and she is listed as performing ‘under contract’, are there any articles out there to bring me up to speed? 🙂
