When did you start dancing?
In a gym near our house when I was seven-years-old.

Why did you start dancing?
It was something my mother wanted me to do, and she took me to the local gym in the provinces where the teacher immediately saw my talent and advised her to take me to a more serious school. Therefore, when I was nine, I started studying in a private dancing school in Turin.

My teacher, Jusa Sabatini, wanted to adopt me when I was ten, after my father died… my mother, obviously, refused. I owe her a lot, because she always believed in me and gave me opportunities to study with wonderful teachers. From the age of sixteen until I was thirty-six, my Maestro and teacher was Mats Ek.

Which dancer inspired you most as a child?
No one because I never thought I'd be a ballerina. I wanted to be a secretary or a business woman. My games were with rubberstamps and blocks of receipts which I stole from the offices where my mother was the cleaner.

Which dancer do you most admire?
The few that transmit emotions.

What's your favourite role?
There is no favourite, each one is part of me: Giselle, Aurora, Juliet, Carmen. Playing them I grew also as a person, so the role I prefer is myself.

What role have you never played but would like to?
Mats Ek is an epic choreographer and in his ballets I have often played the main character as he gave me the opportunity to play almost all the roles created for his wife, Ana Laguna. I must admit though, that when I see Cranko's Onegin I want to get back on pointe to play Tatiana.

What's your favourite ballet to watch?
When I was little it was West Side Story – I never watched a ballet from the classical repertoire; I appreciated that later on when I watched dancers who were so secure technically that they were free to communicate through their technique. I'm never tired of seeing Jiří Kylián' ballets and, obviously, all those by Mats who takes my breath away every time.

Who is your favourite choreographer?
What a question! Mats Ek, of course! He made me fall in love with dance. Then Jiří Kylián because he let me understand that I was OK just as I was. Nacho Duato because I love him. Before them, Cranko and MacMillan because I consider myself a ‘dramatic' artist.

Who is your favourite writer?
I'm not a great reader, but I write a lot… I've always found it difficult to concentrate on the pages of a book – I prefer two eyes.

Who is your favourite theatre or cinema director?
I don't want to sound banal, but Mats Ek is also an exceptional director and I've adored all of his productions. Before him, in Sweden, I admired Bergman a lot. Straight theatre doesn't interest me.

Who is your favourite actor?
Anna Magnani, Meryl Streep.

Who is your favourite singer?
Whitney Houston, Giorgia, Mirella Freni.

What is your favourite book?
I haven't read many, but the writer who has succeeded the most in keeping my attention is Stieg Larsson with his trilogy. I like to read the minds of people and want to share and speak with people who are intelligent. It is stimulating and gives me cause to reflect on things.

What is your favourite film?
Sophie's Choice and all the films of Mel Brooks.

Which is your favourite city?
I have seen so many beautiful cities that I wouldn't know how to choose.

What do you like most about yourself?
My honesty, loyalty, positivity.

What do you dislike about yourself?
My honesty, openness, impulsiveness, lack of discretion.

What was your proudest moment?
When I gave birth, almost painlessly, to two 4 kg (9 lb) babies, and maintaining a figure to die for!

When and where were you happiest?
Usually, always and everywhere, because I make sure I'm surrounded by people who make me feel good.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Love Is something you cannot measure, it's immense. My life is my greatest love.

What is your greatest fear?
To lose those I love.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Physically, now, nothing, but when I was younger I wanted to have a more masculine body.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
To have found my guide and to have never let it go, and so have found the right person to have children with.

What is your most treasured possession?
The people who really know me and my computer.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Technology.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Physical beauty.

On what occasion do you lie?
To avoid suffering.

If you hadn't been a dancer what would you have liked to be?
A secretary or a psychologist.

What is your most marked characteristic?
My positivity and generosity.

What quality do you most value in a friend?
Sincerity, loyalty, generosity.

What quality do you most value in a colleague?
Honesty and respect.

Which historical figure do you most admire?
There are many people who have done important things that have changed mankind, but I've never met them. I admire the people for who they are and not what they've done.

Which living person do you most admire?
It could happen that I meet someone every day to admire, but certainly my husband for his intelligence and Mats Ek for his genius.

What do you most dislike?
Falseness, arrogance, stupidity.

What talent would you most like to have?
To be able to choreograph.

What's your idea of perfect happiness?
Happiness isn't an idea but a decision and I've decided to be happy.

How would you like to die?
Old, with all my faculties, of a heart attack.

What is your motto?
“You reap what you sow”.  “He who wants it all, ends up with nothing”.

Quando hai iniziato a danzare?
In una palestra vicino casa e avevo 7 anni.

Perché hai iniziato a danzare?
Era un desiderio di mia madre, mi portò in una palestra di provincia e l'insegnante notò subito il mio talento e le consigliò di portarmi in una scuola più seria. A 9 anni iniziai così a studiare in una scuola di danza privata a Torino. Il mio Maestro, Jusa Sabatini voleva adottarmi all'età di 10 anni dopo la morte di mio padre, ma mia mamma ovviamente si rifiutò. Gli devo comunque molto perché ha sempre creduto in me dandomi l'opportunità di studiare con bravissimi Maestri. Dai 16 anni ai 36 anni il mio Maestro ed educatore è stato Mats Ek.

Quale danzatore ti ha più ispirato da piccolo?
Nessuno perché non ho mai pensato di fare la ballerina, il mio desiderio era quello di fare la segretaria e la ‘business woman', i miei giochi erano timbri e blocchetti delle ricevute che rubavo negli uffici che puliva mia mamma.

Quale danzatore ammiri di più?
Quei pochi che mi emozionano.

Qual è il tuo ruolo preferito?
Non c'è un ruolo preferito, ognuno di loro è una parte di me, Giselle, Aurora, Giulietta, Carmen. Interpretandoli sono cresciuta anche come persona, quindi quello di me stessa è il ruolo che preferisco.

Quale ruolo non hai mai interpretato ma vorresti o avresti voluto danzare?
Mats Ek è un coreografo epico quindi nei suoi balletti ci sono spesso i personaggi principali, mi ha dato la grande opportunità di interpretare quasi tutti i ruoli creati per sua moglie Ana Laguna. Devo però ammettere che quando guardavo Onegin di Cranko, mi veniva voglia di tornare alle scarpine da punta, per interpretare il ruolo di Tatiana.

Quale balletto non ti stanchi mai di vedere?
Quando ero piccola West side Story, non ho mai guardato un balletto di repertorio classico, l'ho apprezzato solo più tardi quando l'ho visto eseguire da interpreti così sicuri tecnicamente da essere liberi di esprimere attraverso la loro tecnica. Non mi stanco mai di guardare i balletti di Jiří Kylián e ovviamente tutti quelli di Mats che riesce ogni volta a stupirmi.

Chi è il tuo coreografo preferito?
Ma che domanda! Mats Ek ovviamente. perché ha fatto sì che io mi innamorassi della danza, Jiří Kylián perché mi ha fatto capire che andavo bene per com'ero. Nacho Duato perché lo amo. Prima di loro Cranko e MacMillan perché penso di essere un'Artista “drammatica”.

Scrittore preferito?
Non sono una grande lettrice, ma scrivo molto, ho sempre fatto fatica a concentrarmi sulla pagina di un libro, preferisco due occhi.

Regista teatrale o cinematografico?
non vorrei essere banale ma Mats Ek è anche un regista eccezionale e ho adorato tutte le sue produzioni. Prima di lui in Svezia ho apprezzato molto Bergman. La prosa non mi incuriosisce.

Attore / attrice?
Anna Magnani, Meryl Streep.

Cantante?
Whitney Houston, Giorgia, Mirella Freni.

Libro?
Ne ho letti pochi, ma chi è riuscito più di tutti a mantenere la mia concentrazione è stato Stig Larsson con la sua trilogia. Mi piace leggere la mente delle persone e sento di condividere e parlare con le persone intelligenti, mi stimolano e mi fanno riflettere.

Film?
La scelta di Sophie e tutti quelli di Mel Brooks.

Città
Ho visto troppe belle città, non saprei scegliere.

Cosa ti piace di più di te stesso?
L'onestà, la lealtà, la positività.

Cosa non ti piace di te stesso?
L'onestà, la trasparenza, l'impulsività, la poca riservatezza.

Qual è stato il momento di cui sei più orgoglioso?
Aver partorito in maniera quasi indolore due figli di 4 chili e avere una linea invidiabile.

Dove e quando ti sei sentito più felice?
In generale sempre e ovunque, perché faccio in modo di avere intorno a me persone che mi fanno sentire bene.

Cosa o chi è il più grande amore della tua vita?
L'amore è una cosa che non si può misurare, è immenso.  La mia vita è il mio più grande amore.

Qual è la cosa di cui hai più paura?
Di perdere le persone che amo.

Se potessi, cosa cambiaresti di te?
Fisicamente oggi nulla, quando ero più giovane, avrei voluto avere un fisico più mascolino.

Cosa consideri il tuo più grande successo?
Aver trovato la mia guida e non averla mai lasciata e aver trovato la persona giusta con il quale avere dei figli.

Qual è la cosa a cui tieni di più?
Alle persone che mi conoscono davvero bene e il mio computer.

Qual è la tua abitudine più stravagante?
La tecnologia.

Quale virtù ti sembra più sopravvalutata?
La bellezza.

In quale situazione dici una bugia?
Per non far soffrire

Se non fossi stato/a un danzatore/danzatrice cosa ti sarebbe piaciuto fare?
Segretaria o psicologa.

Cos'è la tua più evidente caratteristica?
La positività, generosità.

La qualità che apprezzi di più in un amico?
La sincerità, lealtà, generosità.

La qualità che apprezzi di più in un collega?
L'onesta e il rispetto.

Il personaggio storico che ammiri di più?
Sono tanti i personaggi che hanno fatto delle cose importanti e che hanno cambiato l'umanità, però non li ho mai conosciuti. Io ammiro le persone per come sono e non per cosa hanno fatto.

La persona vivente che ammiri di più?
Mi può capitare di incontrare tutti i giorni qualcuno da ammirare, ma sicuramente mio marito per la sua intelligenza e Mats Ek per la sua genialità.

Cosa non sopporti?
La falsità, l'arroganza, la stupidità.

Quale talento ti piacerebbe avere?
Quello della coreografia.

Qual è la tua idea di perfetta felicità?
La felicità non è un'idea è una decisione e io ho deciso di essere felice

Come vorresti morire?
Vecchia e lucida, con un arresto cardiaco.

Qual è il tuo motto?
Chi semina raccoglie.  Chi troppo vuole nulla stringe.

Pompea Santoro – a biography

Pompea Santoro was born in San Vito dei Normanni, Brindisi.

At seven, after moving to Turin, she started ballet training with several different important ballet teachers: Jozo Borcic (La Scala), Margarita Trayanova (Sofia Opera Ballet), Arlette Castagnet (Rosella Hightower School), Jean Marie Dubrul, Micheal Bruel (Paris Opera Ballet). Besides ballet she also trained in flamenco and jazz.

In 1978, just sixteen, she received an award for “special artistic talent” at the Terpsichore competition with a variation from Carmen.

Pippo Carbone noticed her talent and potential during “Maratona di danza” Festival and recommended her to Birgit Cullberg, then Director of Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm, and she was immediately offered a contract.

At the same time Pompea was accepted into the La Scala School but she chose to join the Swedish company that from 1980 was directed by Birgit's son, Mats Ek with whom Pompea has worked uninterruptedly for 25 years.

Besides having danced many of the principal roles created by Birgit Cullberg's, Pompea performed all the lead and small roles created from 1978 to 1998 by Mats Ek: Giselle, Carmen, Adela and Aurora are the most important. Ek created for her the role of M. in his Carmen, and the television recording went on wo win an Emmy Award.

In 1993 Pompea received the Karina Ari (Sweden) Award as best dancer of the year after having performed in a program dedicated to Jiří Kylián.

In addition to Mats Ek and Kylián she has had the occasion to work with most of the important choreographers of the 20^th century.

In 2000 her image was used on limited edition Swedish stamp to represent the Cullberg Ballet.

Pompea has won several prizes in Italy: Premio Postano (1989), Danza e Danza (1994) as Best Italian Dancer and the Gold Mask in Venice. In 1994 she won Vignale Danza and received honorary citizenship. In 2003 she won Acqui Danza and in 2009 was awarded the Giuliana Penzi Prize.

Since 1996 Pompea has remounted Mats Ek's ballets in important European company's: Bayerische Staatsoper, The Gothenburg Opera, Paris Opera Ballet, Prague Opera Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet where had the chance to teach Carmen both to Sylvie Guillem and Tamara Rojo.

In 1997 she mounted Giselle at La Scala in Milan where Elisabetta Terabust, then Director, asked her to perform as a guest Artist in the lead role.

That was the last time she danced Giselle while in 1998 she performed her last Aurora.

In 2002 she left Cullberg Ballet and returned to Torino where she now lives with her family.

From 2002 until 2005 she was the Artistic Advisor to Torino's Teatro Nuovo and danced in new works by Jacopo Godani and Johan Inger.

She retired from dancing in 2005.

In 2010 she worked with Roberto Bolle and the Ballet Company of the Teatro San Carlo Theater in Naples staging Ek's Giselle.

Now she continues to teach Mats Ek's ballets all over Europe and Italy, and she teaches in eminent dance Academies, both classical and contemporary: Conservatoire de Paris, l'Accademia del Teatro alla Scala di Milano, Académie de Danse Princesse Grace, Codarts e Laban Trinity and others.

In 2012 she founded and directs the EkoDanceInternational Project for young dancers, to help them enter into the professional world of dance.
