Oliver Mears, Director of The Royal Opera said, “Our 25/26 Season represents an exciting new chapter for The Royal Opera. Starting their tenures as Music Director and Principal Guest Conductor, Jakub Hrůša and Speranza Scappucci bring their unique musical brilliance and ability to communicate and inspire, continuing our proud tradition of superlative music-making; Netia Jones begins her tenure as Associate Director with a focus on bold innovation and AI. Across both stages we are thrilled to present eight new productions featuring the very finest singers, conductors and directors. These new shows include the continuation of our remarkable Ring cycle; our ongoing exploration of works by House composers, Handel and Britten; our very first staging of The Makropulos Case; our first new production of I puritani in six decades, and a new Tosca which I’m delighted to be collaborating on with Jakub. In sum – a season of great theatre, great music, and some of the greatest masterpieces of the repertoire.”
Opening the Season on 11 September, Hrůša and Mears will mount a new production of Puccini‘s Tosca. War-torn, modern-day Rome provides the backdrop for this new production. The cast includes Anna Netrebko and Aleksandra Kurzak sharing the title role, Freddie De Tommaso as Cavaradossi, and Gerald Finley as Baron Scarpia.
Later in September, in a nod to his musical heritage, Hrůša leads the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and the Royal Opera Chorusin a one-off concert of Hungarian and Czech music featuring the hallucinatory orchestral colours of Bartók‘s Miraculous Mandarin suite, and Dvořák‘s rarely heard cantata for soloists and chorus, The Spectre’s Bride.
In November, Hrůša will go on to lead The Royal Opera’s first-ever staging of Janáček‘s haunting and enigmatic opera The Makropulos Case, in a contemporary new production by Katie Mitchell which sees Ausrine Stundyte make a return to Covent Garden in the title role. In May, Hrůša will conduct the first revival of Deborah Warner‘s production of Peter Grimes, with Allan Clayton, Maria Bengtsson and Bryn Terfel reprising their roles in Britten‘s bleak parable.
Hrůša said, “From my first experience working at The Royal Opera in 2018, it was clear to me that here is a place where the art form can be performed at the highest conceivable level. Alongside our fantastic Chorus, at the musical heart of every production and performance is the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. Their focus, commitment, dedication and consistent quality are a given fact, cultivated over many years by my wonderful predecessor and colleague Tony Pappano. To lead such an ensemble is an endless honour and thrill. Within our collaboration, a boundless mutual inspiration has already begun to unfold.”
Moments of transcendent beauty and heroic triumph sparkle in the third instalment of Wagner‘s Ring cycle, as Siegfried is brought to life under Barrie Kosky‘s imaginative eye. Conducted by Antonio Pappano, Andreas Schager makes his much-anticipated debut with The Royal Opera as Siegfried’s titular hero, alongside Christopher Maltman, Peter Hoare and Elisabet Strid.
Director Richard Jones returns to Covent Garden to direct a new production of I puritani. Conducted by Riccardo Frizza in his House debut, this will be The Royal Opera’s first new production of Bellini‘s last opera since Zeffirelli‘s 1964 staging, and will feature a cast including Lisette Oropesa, Francesco Demuro, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Andrzej Filończyk and Marcela Rahal, who makes her House debut.
Two new productions continue the Company’s series of Handel works written for Covent Garden, with two directors making their Royal Opera debuts. Jetske Mijnssen directs Ariodante on the Main Stage, with Stefano Montanari conducting a cast that includes Emily D’Angelo and Jacquelyn Stucker, alongside Christophe Dumaux and Elena Villalón who make their House debuts. In the Linbury Theatre, Handel’s 1737 work Giustino will open the opera Season. British theatre and opera director Joe Hill-Gibbins (Ghosts, Wanamaker Playhouse, The Marriage of Figaro, English National Opera) joins forces with conductor David Bates, who leads his acclaimed Baroque ensemble La Nuova Musica, in this co-production with The Royal Opera.
In summer 2026, The Royal Opera will host a new annual festival connecting the worlds of opera and technology. Curated by Associate Director Netia Jones, RBO/SHIFT will explore the shifting boundary between opera and technology, with a focus on the ever-growing world of artificial intelligence.
The Royal Opera’s exploration of Benjamin Britten works continues in the Linbury Theatre with a chilling new production of The Turn of the Screw. Bassem Akiki conducts a new staging, created by Natalie Abrahami and Michael Levine.
The Jette Parker Artists offer the opportunity to hear the work of three female composers in one show, directed and conducted by JPAs Talia Stern, making her Royal Opera debut, and Peggy Wu. Jette Parker Artists: Three Chamber Operas features Elizabeth Maconchy‘s 1961 piece The Departure and Charlotte Bray‘s 2012 work Making Arrangements. In a wry translation of the yearnings of Chekhov‘s Three Sisters, Elena Langer‘s 2012 piece, Four Sisters, evokes and dashes the American dream and marks the UK professional premiere of Langer’s chamber opera version.
Following sell-out success in the Linbury Theatre and subsequent transfer to the LA Phil in 2024, composer Oliver Leith and librettist/co-director Matt Copson‘s visceral opera Last Days returns. Adapted from Gus Van Sant‘s 2005 film based on the final days of grunge icon Kurt Cobain, Last Days features experimental sound design and an original aria recorded by singer-songwriter Caroline Polachek.
Revivals of world-class repertory classics include a trio of Verdi‘s best-loved operas. Mark Elder conducts Rigoletto. Two casts that include George Petean, Daniel Luis de Vicente, Aida Garifullina, Rosa Feola, Robyn Allegra Parton, Liparit Avetisyan and Iván Ayón Rivas take to the stage in Oliver Mears‘ darkly seductive production. Ermonela Jaho, Pretty Yende and Rachel Willis-Sørensen star in Richard Eyre‘s classic production of La traviata, conducted by Antonello Manacorda and Giacomo Sagripanti.
Alexander Soddy conducts the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in the first revival of Richard Jones’ acclaimed production of Samson et Dalila starring SeokJong Baek and Aigul Akhmetshina in the title roles.
Daniel Oren and Richard Hetherington conduct Andrei Șerban‘s production of Puccini‘s Turandot, with Anna Netrebko, Maida Hundeling and Anna Pirozzi sharing the title role and Yusif Eyvazov, Arsen Soghomonyan and Roberto Alagna sharing the role of Calaf. Richard Jones‘ staging of La bohème is also revived, conducted by Lorenzo Passerini in his House debut and and Christopher Willis starring Juliana Grigoryan, Hrachuhí Bassénz, Freddie De Tommaso and Stefan Pop.
Alex Esposito, Louise Alder, Andrey Zhilikhovsky, and Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha star as Figaro, Susanna, the Count and the Countess in David McVicar‘s The Marriage of Figaro, conducted by Giedrė Šlekytė. McVicar’s The Magic Flute also returns – two casts include Julia Bullock, Lucy Crowe, Huw Montague Rendall, and Amitai Pati and Mingjie Lei who both make House debuts, led by French conductor Marie Jacquot in her Covent Garden debut. Finnegan Downie Dear also conducts.
Richard Jones’ staging of Mussorgsky‘s opera Boris Godunov returns, with Mark Wigglesworth conducting Bryn Terfel as the tormented Tsar.
In May, the two resident Companies come together with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera Chorus in a special gala evening of music and dance. And in June, soprano Anna Netrebko performs an intimate recital of songs and arias by German, Russian and French composers on the main stage, accompanied on the piano by Pavel Nebolsin.
Closing the Season, Yves Abel conducts Donizetti‘s La fille du régiment. Laurent Pelly‘s staging stars Sara Blanch who makes her main stage debut alongside Juan Diego Flórez and Jonah Hoskins who makes his House debut.
